I’ve tested A LOT of hot chocolate recipes this month, but this one is by far my favorite. This easy healthy hot chocolate is quick to make, so creamy and satisfying, and made with wholesome ingredients, which makes it the perfect daily treat.
This is the BEST easy healthy hot chocolate. Last month I said bye to my iced matchas (still love em though) and hello to hot chocolate. And when I say I said hello, I mean I REALLY welcomed it in like a long-lost friend I hadn’t seen in years and spent most mornings or evenings of the past month with it. So yeah, hot chocolate and I are getting kinda close.
I’ve tried lots and lots of versions so far and this is by far my favorite! The secret ingredient is…ALMOND BUTTER. It adds such a satisfying creaminess that you may be able to make this with water if you’re out of milk. This hot chocolate is sweetened with dates, my favorite natural sweetener that contributes to the creaminess.
Let’s break it down
1. Non-dairy milk. I always use homemade nut milk, which is naturally creamier. That’s why I use half milk and half water. Pick your proportion based on desired texture, but know that this will probably end up creamy even if you use water because of the almond butter!
2. Almond butter. I’d like to say this is an essential ingredient. You can try using a different nut butter or tahini or sun butter for nut-free options.
3. Dates. Wholesome, creamy, dreamy…what more could you ask for?
4. Cacao. The quality of the cacao does make a difference, but use whatever you have on hand. Substitute unsweetened cocoa or dark chocolate.
5. Cayenne for a little something extra.
6. Sea salt because chocolate and sea salt are the ultimate power couple.
7. Maca. Not an essential ingredient, but would highly recommend if you have some!
Pour this easy healthy hot chocolate into your favorite holiday mugs and enjoy with the people around you.
